FAQ

Below are questions that I receive rather frequently. I make a diligent effort to keep this page updated, so please assume that the response to each question is up to date. If you have a question that is not answered in the below, feel free to shoot me a DM on Twitter.

Who are you?

My name is Shawn, but I’m better known as @SamkonModels on Twitter (formerly @SamkonGado). I’m a 25 year old guy from Wisconsin that was always fascinated by the world of sports analytics and decided to learn how to build predictive sports models.

WHEN / HOW / WHY DID YOU START MODELING?

In June of 2018, I decided I would try to build a predictive model for the upcoming NFL season. At the time, I had zero previous experience with programming, computer science, etc. I slowly built up my knowledge and skills by scavenging the internet for resources.

HOW DID YOUR NFL MODEL DO?

The 2018 NFL model went 75-47-6 (61% hit rate) for +89.3 units of profit (18% ROI). You can view a model plays tracker here and read a full recap here.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER MODELS?

Yes, since the NFL model I have built models for the NBA, NCAAM, and MLB?

DO YOU SHARE ANY OF YOUR OTHER MODELS?

I do not share the NBA model plays, as the NBA is a personal favorite of mine and I would like to keep that private for my own enjoyment. However, I have been sharing NCAAM model plays and plan on sharing MLB model plays in some capacity in the future.

HOW DO I GET YOUR NCAAM MODEL PLAYS?

Model plays were made available to those who donated $20+ to Doctors Without Borders from February 12-13 and February 27-28. In total, 995 contributions were made and $25,378 was raised. It was awesome. Model play access is no longer available.

HOW IS THE NCAAM MODEL DOING?

You can check out this Google Sheet to see how the model has been performing. Please check out the Overview tab for any questions regarding the model.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR MLB MODEL PLAYS?

MLB model plays are available for purchase by visiting the Products page.

HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH MODELING?

I do not offer any specific guidance when it comes to getting started with modeling. I believe that the best approach is to just dive in and begin a process of self-sustained learning. This way you will become dependent on only yourself as you develop your knowledge and skills. Drawing heavy influence and direction from someone will likely just lead you to suboptimal results and diluted edges compared to whoever you had received direction from.

WHAT SITES / STATS / ETC. DO YOU USE?

I do not disclose any of the information that I use for any of my models.
